The first ape to use a tool — a stick or bone, perhaps — used it, no doubt, to kill or maim his fellow ape. We are no more civilized today than he.
The history lesson to be learned from the rise of Hitler is not that he was sublimely evil in a way no other man was before—but that at ANY moment in time humans may become so convinced of a lie they would follow the angry herd into hell itself to save themselves from fear.
The sad truth of humanity & its fallen state is that ANY man might become a Hitler when the soil of desperation & despair is ripe enough and he be in a position to use fear & hate as a weapon. In such a garden, he need only point a finger for his sheep to target their vitriol.
Man is a pliable & gullible creature. Like sheep, he feels naked without a shepherd; yet man cares not for the virtue or quality of his leader—only that they promise big promises and lie big lies. Man cares not even if the lies are exposed as long as the lies make him feel safe.
Man’s desire to be shepherded is in his blood. He does not want a leader; he NEEDS a leader. When cold or hungry & HIS leader promises comfort, he sheds his soul in exchange for salvation. If his leader tells him to bomb a hospital or starve a child, he does so without question.
