2020: In Pursuit of Life (a Poem)

Wise men once asked ‘what good a man gain the whole world but lose his own soul…
Might he sacrifice all that he loves to attain some nebulous goal?
For what tragic fool seeking LIFE would trade family, freedom, and song?

Would seeking some ‘right,’ at all costs, engender more wrong?

By this token, what purpose hath man in a world bereft of soul and all life?

Would he arrest a wound bleeding by stabbing it through with a knife?
Does man sacrifice sacred means at expense of temporal ends—
Especially when doing so causes such ends themselves to break and not bend

Would we dare to defile ourselves in an attempt to keep clean—
Or smother mere babes in their cribs to ensure this cures their ill dreams?
Yet such ends we embrace when we blindly trade living for life!
We sacrifice everything we might love in an attempt to shun strife …

All concerts are quiet; today the bands are forbidden to play.
The crowds who might dare attend them stay scared and silenced each day.
Restaurants are closed, and livelihoods by steely words of tyrants are wrecked:
Ordained from on high by men who’ll never dream miss their government check.

Wise men might ask why do we sacrifice life on the alter of living…?
A better question might be: why do we take from others under the guise of our giving?
Is it man’s fate or his bane that he trade ignorance for truth?
Is it his plight, or his choice, to ignore unsavory proof …

Proof that our short lives on this spinning orb are meant to live free
Free of hysteria, free of unthinking; free from villains who’d keep life’s music from me!
Wise men!—wise men know true wisdom and would define it as thus:

Life is not free unless it is LIVED and lived much
Live life! Live to the very fullest extent.
Live your best life, as truly God meant.

Huddled up, shuttered up, grasping for air…
There’s breathing, sure, but there’s little life there!
Life is found in memories shared: in the company of friends and family to care.
Life is in living, life’s found day-to-day.

Life’s savored; life’s not given—-so don’t freely give yours away!”

Sean believes the country in which we live needs to re-examine what Jefferson, Washington, Franklin, and Adams believed (and were willing to die for). The message of freedom is not a tag line or something to be embarrassed by, but is sacrosanct and more important than ever!
